More About ROWLAND EVANS:
Howard Jenkins: Rowland, the son of John and Eleanor, of Gwynedd, and brother to Dr. Cdwalader, was prominent in public affairs for many years. He was appointed justice of the peace in 1749, 1752, 1757, and 1761. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly for Philadelphia County in 1761, and from that year on to 1771, inclusive (except 1764). His residence was first in Gwynedd, and in 1760 he owned part of his father's tract. At a later date (as early as 1766) he removed to Providence, and he was in business there for a number of years. The Philadelphia Gazette, June 30, 1784, contains his card, announcing that he "has lately removed form his former Residence in Providence Township, Philadelphia County," and that he is prepared to draw "Deeds, mortgages, articles of agreement, and other instruments of writing, at his house on the east side of Fourth street, a few doors below Race street." September 14, 1785, he was appointed one of the Commissioners of the General Loan Office of Pennsylvania, and he held this place until his death, August 8, 1789. Like his brother Cadwalader, he took an interest in scientific study, and he was elected a member of the "American Society for the Promotion of Useful Knowledge," which was united with the American Philosophical Society in 1769. The Pennsylvania Gazette of Wednesday, August 19, 1789, contained the following notice:

"On Saturday se'ennight died Rowland Evans, Esquire, of this city, in the seventy-second year of age. Previous to the revolution this gentleman was for many years a member of the Legislature and a Justice of the Peace, both of which he filled with great ability, dignity, and applause. And since the conclusion of the war, he was appointed one of the Trustees of the general loan office of this commonwealth, which he held to the time of his death, and on Sunday following a great assemblage of the people attended at the deposit of his remains in the Quakers' burial ground in this place [Philadelphia].

Bob Smith's genealogy says David died in Centre Co., PA. I wonder about this since he gives a child not included in Jenkins' Evans genealogy with a conflicting birthdate (Israel b. 17 Oct 1770 conflicts with David b. 26 Jun 1770) and Jenkins says he is buried at Arch St. meeting house.

At our monthly meeting held in Gwynedd the 30th of the 4th month 1776

4th David Evans gave in a Certificate for himself and wife & their four Children viz Leticia, Gulielma, Charles & David from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of the Southern District dated the 27 of the 3rd month last, wherein they recommend him a friend well esteemed amongst them, a diligent attender of Meetings, and serviceable in the discipline of the Church -- his Wife also a diligent attender of meetings when in health & of a sober conduct & well esteemed and their Children young. Notes for SAMUEL EVANS:

School teacher in Gwynedd twp. He owned the place where his grandfather Thomas had lived (stone house still stands, near the corner of Sumneytown Pike and Upper Valley Rd.).

Samuel Evans (son of Owen and Ruth) was a teacher "at North Wales," towards the close of the last century. A school was kept under the oversight of the Friends, at the meeting-house, at least as early as 1793. Joseph Foulke, in a manuscript furnished the writer in 1859, recalled the following facts:

"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There was no house for the purpose, but what was called "the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament; we had Dilworth's Spelling-Book, and Dilworth's Assistant (or Arithmetic). Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was however a small part of the spelling-book called "A New Guide to the English Tongue," and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this, by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar."

It was this John who furnished Cadwallader, his nephew (son of Rowland), with the family data which form the basis of the Family Record of 1797 and later. He was known in Gwynedd as "John Evans, the elder" (though his own father's name was John), in order to distinguish him from his son John. He was a prominent and active member of Gwynedd meeting. Joseph Foulke gives some interesting reminiscences of him. He lived all his life at the old home of his father and grandfather, in Gwynedd now (1896) the Hollingsworth estate place). "From letters in my possession, written to his son," says Rowland Evans, Esq., "he seems to have been an earnestly religious man." His will, which presents him as quite a rich man, was probated November 6, 1807. He gives his son John the "plantation, consisting of three tracts, where he now dwells," in Gwynedd, about 192 acres; directs his son Cadwallader to release any supposed claim he may have on the fee or title, in consideration of bequests now made him; leaves two tracts (homestead) to his son Cadwalader, on 245 acres, the other 36, he to pay 500 pounds to his [the testator's] grandsons John and Robert; bequeaths to his friends Levi Foulke, Jesse Foulke, and John Jones jr., son of Evan, or their survivors, 20 pounds in trust to keep up the burial ground enclosure at Gwynedd meeting, the fund to be used in the discretion of Gwynedd preparative meeting; gives his son Cadwalader two undivided thirds in 50 acres of land adjoining the homestead, "late estate of brother Cadwalader," gives son Cadwalader the half residue of estate, the other half to grandson Robert; gives 200 pounds to son John; gives 200 pounds to grandsons Rowland and Evan in equal shares; appoints son Cadwalader and grandson Robert executors.

The second John Evans, of Gwynedd, called John "the elder," is thus described by the late Joseph Foulke: "Among the remarkable persons that I recollect in those early days [about 1800] was John Evans, the elder. He was a tall, spare person, with a long visage, and very wrinkled face. He carried a smooth cane, with a carved head and natural curve. He wore loops in his hat, with the rim slightly turned up behind and at the two sides. He and two or three others of Gwynedd were among the first who took a firm stand against the use of ardent spirits. They banished it from their houses and harvest fields, though in the face of great difficulties. One of the last meetings that John Evans attended, he spoke on this subject, saying that 'where he had endeavored most he had effected least,' but urging his hearers to persevere."

Children of JOHN EVANS and MARGARET FOULKE are:

128. JOHN HANK (SARAH4 EVANS, CADWALADER3, EVAN AP2 EVAN, IEVAN KNOWN AS EVAN ROBERT1 LEWIS) was born September 20, 1712 in Whitemarsh twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1780 in Of Rockingham Co., VA. He married MARGARET WILLIAMS Aft. February 1736/37, daughter of THOMAS WILLIAMS and JANE MORRIS. She was born April 25, 1721, and died Aft. 1787.

Notes for JOHN HANK: H.M. Jenkins (1897): "The precise name of the head of the Hank family who thus removed, is uncertain, but Mr. David Lincoln, of Birdsboro, Berks county, in a letter to me, September 1883, thinks it was John, and says: 'He lived on the Perkiomen turnpike, six miles east of Reading, in Exeter township, and within half a mile of Mordecai Lincoln, great-great-grandfather of the President. This John Hank, with John and Benjamin Lincoln, moved to Fayette county, and from there Mr. Hank went southward.'

As to a removal, first, to Fayette county, I do not know; but as has already been noted (p. 208), John Hank was in Rockingham county, Va., at least as early as 1787, when his daughter Hannah married Asa Lupton. That this John was the one described by Mr. Lincoln is probable, or he may have been a son of the Berks county man, for the latter was in all probablility the same John Hank who was born 1712, the son of the Whitemarsh yeoman and Sarah Evans of Gwynedd."

"Mordecai Lincoln's son John and Joseph's brother, John, became fast friends and both eventually migrated to Augusta county, Virginia (now Rockingham) in the early 1770s. The children of Joseph Hanks, his brother John, and Michael Ludwig all became friends, so it was natural that a marriage would occur among them.

J. Quinn adds: Evidence, including y-dna of descendants of Nancy Hanks' Lincoln's cousins Dennis and John the "Railsplitter" Hanks indicate that she is descended from a line of Hanks from Richmond Co., Virginia and documentation supports this. However, no descendant of the Gwynedd line has had their dna testing as of today (Nov 2007).

Many of the John Hank m. Margaret Williams line are from Wallace Ewing's Rootsweb Worldconnect database.

Bill Foulke: The marriage of Samuel and Ann was the first after the establishment of Richland MM. He was the clerk of the meeting for 37 years. He was a member of the provincial assembly from 1761 to 1768. He was also clerk of the committee of ministers and elders for nearly 30 years.

Samuel Foulke was a personal friend of John Woolman's. Samuel's home was the beginning and end point of Woolman's journey to visit the Leni Lenape/Moravian Indians during the French and Indian war in 1758 [from Woolman's Journal, chapter 8].

http://www.foulke.org

1742 Samuel Foulke was named as clerk of Richland Monthly Meeting when it was first established and continued in that office for thirty-seven years.

1761-1768 Represented Bucks County in the Provincial Assembly.

He was also for many years Justice of the Peace and did a vast amount of public business, writing practically all the wills and deeds for the English-speaking people of his section.

1775-81 At the outbreak of the Revolution he and his brothers, John, Thomas , and Theophilus, signed the Oath of Allegiance to the Colonies as prescribed by the Pennsylvanis Assembly. This was deemed an offense against the principles of Friends by other members of the monthly meeting, and the four brothers were disowned from membership. However, he continued to sit at the head of the meeting and acted as clerk during the whole period, and did much to hold the patriotic Quakers back from active participation in war-like measure while giving their allegiance to the patriot cause in accordance with what he conceived to be conformity to the laws of the state.

It was Samuel who translated the narrative of Edward Foulke, the emigrant, into English.

Occupation: Financier

Joseph Wharton, who founded a college, was a noted financier and built the mansion, "Walnut Grove", taken by the British under the direction of Major Andrea (later hung as a spy in the Benedict Arnold treason) for a great masked ball "The Mischianza". A history of Pennsylvania describing Walnut Grove says the dining room was 40 x 210 feet by 22 feet high.

Joseph was a very successful business merchant. In the last years of his life he retired to his country estate Walnut Grove, which soon after his death was made famous by the Meschianza.

Joseph also had a comfortable home at 119 Lombard Street in Philadelphia which passed to his son William upon his death.

It is the offspring of Joseph Wharton who became dynamic forces in the Society of Friends for over a century. This is in part no doubt do to the fact that Joseph's first wife was Hannah Carpenter whom he married March 05, 1728/29 at the Philadelphia Meeting House, Philadelphia, PA. Hannah was the daughter of John and Ann Hoskins Carpenter, active members of the faith.
